چکیده

Pronoun interpretation in English has been demonstrated to be sensitive to an interaction between grammatical and pragmatically-driven factors. This study investigated the interpretation of pronouns in Japanese, which has both null and overt forms. Thirty-two native speakers of Japanese participated in a passage completion experiment with transfer-of-possession contexts, varying prompt type, aspect, and topic/nominativemarking of the previous subject. Two judges annotated the referents of the matrix subjects and coherence relations in the completed passages. Japanese overt pronouns were revealed to pattern closely with English overt pronouns in their sensitivity to pragmatic factors, whereas Japanese null pronouns were predominantly governed by grammatical position. Somewhat surprisingly, topic-marking did not influence reference or coherence relations. The data suggest distinctive patterns of interactions between grammatical and pragmatic factors in the interpretation of null and overt pronouns in Japanese, and cast doubt on the existence of a division of labor between the two forms.

L2 acquisition of discourse constraints on the use of Japanese pronouns

Previous studies have suggested that ambiguous null pronouns are biased to co-refer with topical subject antecedents. In Italian, for example, Belletti, Bennati & Sorace (2007) (henceforth BB&S) suggested that null subject pronouns typically co-refer with already established topic antecedents ([topic shift]), whereas overt subject pronouns signal a change in topic ([+topic shift]). This discour...

Refining Salience and the Position of Antecedent Hypothesis: a Study of Catalan Pronouns

Introduction: This paper presents an experiment that investigates which factors govern the referring preferences of two types of subject pronouns in Catalan: null pronouns, with no phonological content, and overt pronouns, which carry gender and number features. Since it is generally assumed that the more reduced an anaphoric expression is, the more salient its antecedent will be (Ariel, 2001),...

Is the Overt Pronoun Constraint Universal?

It has been observed that overt and null subjects do not have the same distributional properties within the same pro-drop language. That is, there are certain grammatical and discourse principles that determine the occurrence of overt versus null pronominal subjects in a particular context (Enç, 1986; Erguvanlı-Taylan, 1986; Pérez-Leroux & Glass, 1997, 1999). For example, it is known that overt...
